Claude in Google Docs: What It Costs Next to Gemini - Memeburn

TL;DR

- Claude for Google Workspace launched in public beta on October 6, 2026 for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with a sidebar in Docs, Sheets and Slides plus connectors that open Google files inside Claude.

- The beta cannot read Docs comments or suggested edits, cannot reach other Drive files, and keeps content for 30 days with no zero data retention option.

- Gemini is included in Workspace Business Standard at about $14 per user per month, while a Claude Team seat adds $20, taking the per-user bill to $34.

- Google Docs is the third office suite Claude has moved into since May, after Microsoft 365 and Anthropic's own Claude Docs and Slides.

Anthropic’s new sidebar costs nothing extra for people who already pay for Claude, but for a Google Workspace team it is a second assistant that costs more than the suite it sits in.

Anthropic has put Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a public beta, so anyone on a paid Claude plan can now open a sidebar next to a Google file, ask Claude to rewrite a section or build a pivot table, and approve the edits without copying anything back and forth. The launch on October 6 also works in the other direction, since new connectors let users paste a Google file link into Claude and edit it from there, according to 9to5Google. Within hours, a “Justice for Gemini” meme was circulating on X, because Gemini has been the assistant built into that sidebar since Google folded it into Workspace.

The meme gets the rivalry right but misses who the launch is really for. For people already paying for a Claude plan, the sidebar is a free upgrade to something they were doing by hand. For a Workspace administrator, it is an optional second assistant whose price lands on top of a seat that already includes Gemini. And for Anthropic, it is the third office suite Claude has moved into in five months, which says more about the company’s strategy than any single feature does.

What Claude Can and Cannot Do Inside a Google File

Claude for Google Workspace installs once from the Google Workspace Marketplace and appears in all three apps with the models already on a user’s plan. According to Anthropic’s Help Center page, it can restructure documents, write and debug formulas, build charts, and turn notes into slides that follow a deck’s theme. The default “Ask before edits” setting shows each change and waits for approval, while “Accept all edits” only pauses for links, images or access changes.

The same Help Center page is more candid about the gaps than most launch coverage. In this beta, Claude cannot read or resolve comments in Docs or work with suggested edits, cannot reach other files in a user’s Drive, inserts charts into Slides as static images rather than linked ones, and stops any single operation after six minutes. Content is not used for training, but it is kept for 30 days under standard retention because zero data retention is not available during the beta, which matters for the same kind of enterprise buyer that led Microsoft to block some employees from using Claude Fable 5 over retention concerns.

Gemini Is Bundled Into the Workspace Seat, Claude Is Not

Google stopped selling Gemini as a separate $20 to $30 add-on in January 2025 and folded it into Workspace Business and Enterprise plans, raising Business Standard to about $14 per user per month, according to 9to5Google’s report at the time. That price still holds on annual billing, with Business Starter at $7 and Business Plus at $22, according to a June 2026 pricing guide. Google’s own pricing page shows one detail that changes the maths for small teams, because Business Starter does not include Gemini in Docs, Sheets or Slides at all.

Claude is priced separately, with Pro at $17 a month on annual billing or $20 monthly and a standard Team seat at $20 a month annually or $25 monthly, according to Anthropic’s pricing page. Memeburn put the two price lists together for a typical small business on annual billing.

Prices checked October 7, 2026. Workspace prices exclude local taxes; Claude Team requires at least two seats.

Memeburn calculated that adding Claude to a Business Standard seat raises the per-user bill from $14 to $34, roughly 2.4 times, which means the second assistant costs more than the whole suite it sits inside. The Starter row makes the same point from the other side, since a team that wants any AI in its documents can get Gemini by upgrading to Standard for an extra $7 a month, or get Claude for an extra $20. Since Claude cannot win this on price, it has to win on the quality of the work.

Anthropic Now Edits Documents in Three Different Suites

Claude for Google Workspace makes most sense next to two earlier launches. In May, Anthropic made Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word generally available and put Claude for Outlook into public beta, all for paid Claude users, according to Anthropic’s announcement. In September, it launched its own Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta for Pro and Max users, with decks that export to PowerPoint or PDF, according to Techweez. Microsoft’s Copilot also lets customers pick Anthropic models, as VentureBeat noted in its coverage of the Google launch.

On the surface, building a rival to Google Docs and then moving into Google Docs three weeks later looks contradictory. Memeburn’s reading is that Anthropic is not trying to own the file format at all. Every one of these surfaces, whether Microsoft’s, Google’s or its own, requires a paid Claude plan, so the product Anthropic is selling is the Claude seat, and the document simply lives wherever the customer already keeps it, which leaves little reason to force anyone to migrate.

Why Google Can Live With a Rival in Its Sidebar

Claude for Google Workspace is distributed through Google’s own Marketplace, Workspace administrators decide whether staff can install it, and Gemini stays the default that is already paid for in every Standard and Plus seat, so the meme’s premise that Gemini has been pushed aside overstates what changed. Google also has a financial stake in Claude’s growth, having agreed in April to invest $10 billion in Anthropic at a $350 billion valuation, with up to $30 billion more tied to performance targets, according to Business Today, citing Bloomberg. Whatever Google thinks about sharing the sidebar, a Claude subscriber working inside Google Docs is still a Workspace customer whose files have not moved.

Who Should Turn It On Now, and Who Should Wait

- People who already pay for Claude Pro, Max or Team should install it, keep “Ask before edits” switched on, and use it for spreadsheet and slide work that previously meant pasting content into a chat window.

- Business Standard teams that are happy with Gemini should trial Claude on a few seats for specific jobs before buying it for everyone, because at $20 per seat the comparison has to be about output quality rather than convenience.

- Business Starter teams should price the $7 upgrade to Standard against a $20 Claude seat before choosing, since the cheaper route to an in-document assistant runs through Gemini.

- Teams handling regulated or confidential data should wait for general availability, because the beta keeps content for 30 days and does not offer zero data retention.

Our Claude vs Gemini comparison covers how the two differ outside the office suite, and our Claude review asks whether the $20 plan earns its price on its own.

The two gaps to watch as the beta matures are support for comments and suggested edits in Docs, which is how most teams actually review documents, and zero data retention, which decides whether larger companies can deploy it at all. If Anthropic closes both, the question for Workspace buyers shifts from whether Claude fits inside Google’s suite to whether they want to pay for two assistants in the same document.
