Galaxy F70 5G in 2026: An A17 Twin for $210, 2 Fewer Updates - Memeburn

TL;DR

- The Galaxy F70 5G costs Rs 19,999 (~$210) for 4GB/128GB and goes on sale October 20.

- Its codename, chip, cameras, 7.5mm body and 192g weight all match the Galaxy A17 5G.

- The likely upgrade is a 120Hz screen, up from the A17's 90Hz, if Samsung's listing holds.

- The F70 gets 4 Android upgrades and 5 years of patches. The A17 got 6 and 6.

- A 6GB F70 costs about Rs 5,000 (~$53) less than the same A17 after September's price hike.

Samsung’s Galaxy F70 5G just launched in India at Rs 19,999 (~$210), and almost everything inside it matches a phone Samsung already sells: the Galaxy A17 5G. That matters because memory costs have pushed cheap phone prices up all year, and the A17 itself now costs far more than it did at launch. Here’s what the F70 actually changes, what Samsung quietly cut, and which of the two you should buy.

Samsung Galaxy A57

Overview

- 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with a fluid 120Hz refresh rate.

- 50MP OIS main camera with 4K video recording and 12MP ultrawide lens.

- Slim 6.9mm body, 5,000mAh battery, and up to 29 hours of video playback.

The Price and Where to Buy It

The Galaxy F70 5G comes in two versions, both with 128GB of storage:

Sales start October 20 at 12 p.m. on Flipkart and Samsung India’s website, in Bold Black and Vivid Violet. The phone supports 25W charging, but the charger isn’t in the box, so budget about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 extra if you don’t already own one.

It’s an India-only phone for now. Samsung’s F-series is its online-first line, built mainly for Flipkart, so don’t expect it in US or UK stores.

How We Know It’s an A17 Underneath

Samsung doesn’t call the F70 a rebrand. The clues do the talking.

Before launch, the F70 showed up on Google Play’s supported devices list under the codename “a17x”, the same codename the Galaxy A17 5G uses. Its model number, SM-E176E, also surfaced on India’s BIS certification site on September 29. BIS is the Bureau of Indian Standards, which every phone needs to pass before it’s sold in India.

Now put the spec sheets side by side:

The thickness and weight match to the millimeter and gram. That’s not a coincidence. In our view, the F70 is the A17 in a new set of colors, with a few settings changed and a smaller update promise.

The One Real Upgrade: Possibly a Faster Screen

Samsung’s launch listing says the F70’s screen runs at 120Hz. Refresh rate is how many times per second the image updates, so 120Hz makes scrolling feel noticeably smoother than the A17’s 90Hz.

There’s a catch, though. Some early spec sheets for the F70 still list 90Hz, which would make the phones identical. If you care about smooth scrolling, check the display settings in a store or on Samsung’s product page before you pay.

The screen itself is good for the price. Super AMOLED panels show deep blacks and punchy colors, and the front is covered by Gorilla Glass Victus, a tougher scratch- and drop-resistant glass than most phones at this price use.

The Chip Is Getting Old

The Exynos 1330 is Samsung’s own chip, built on a 5-nanometer process with two faster Cortex-A78 cores and six efficient Cortex-A55 cores. It first appeared in Samsung phones back in 2023, so it’s now about three years old.

For WhatsApp, YouTube, banking apps, and light games, it’s fine. For heavier games or heavy multitasking, 4GB of RAM is tight in 2026. RAM is the phone’s short-term memory, and Android apps keep getting hungrier for it. We’d skip the 4GB model if you can stretch to 6GB.

You do get a microSD card slot for up to 2TB of extra storage, though it shares a tray with the second SIM card, so you’ll have to pick one or the other.

The Camera: OIS Is the Highlight

The 50MP main camera has OIS (optical image stabilization), which physically moves parts of the camera to cancel hand shake. Samsung markets this as “No Shake Cam,” and it’s the feature that most cheap phones skip. It helps with low-light shots and steadier video.

The other two rear cameras are mostly there to fill the spec sheet. A 5MP ultrawide is usable in daylight, and a 2MP macro for close-ups rarely beats simply cropping a main-camera photo. The 13MP selfie camera covers video calls.

What You Lose: Two Years of Android Upgrades

Here’s the part we think most buyers will miss.

Samsung promises the F70 four Android upgrades and five years of security updates. The A17 5G launched with six upgrades and six years of security updates, one of the longest promises at any price. Samsung is already testing One UI 9.5 on the Galaxy A17, which shows how seriously it takes that promise on cheap phones.

So for the same hardware, the F70 stops getting new Android versions about two years earlier. If you keep a phone for three years, you won’t notice. If you hand it down to a parent or keep it for five, you will. Security updates matter even more, because they patch holes that scammers and malware use.

So Why Does the F70 Exist?

Our read: it’s Samsung’s answer to its own price hikes.

The A17 5G launched in India at Rs 18,999 for 6GB/128GB in August 2025. After Samsung’s price increase on September 2, that same model lists at about Rs 27,999 (~$295). That’s a jump of roughly 47% in a year, mostly blamed across the industry on rising memory chip prices.

That pushed the A17 out of the under-Rs 20,000 bracket, one of India’s busiest price ranges. A rebadged version with a new name, a cheaper 4GB option, and a shorter update promise lets Samsung sell the same phone there again without officially cutting the A17’s price. We’ve seen the same squeeze elsewhere, like the Galaxy A08 4G costing twice what the A07 did with the same chip.

FAQs

Is Samsung’s Galaxy A57 worth the extra money?

It’s a big step up, with a faster chip, a brighter 120Hz screen, and up to six Android upgrades. Early One UI 9 builds caused some trouble, though, and the Galaxy A57 update freezing fix takes about two minutes if it happens to you.

Which budget phone gets the longest software support?

Samsung and Google lead, with six to seven years on some models. Google’s next budget phone could change the math, especially if the Pixel 11a price lands at $599 and keeps Google’s seven-year promise.

Why are cheap phones getting more expensive in 2026?

Memory chips cost much more this year, as factories shift production to AI data centers. Phone makers are passing that on, or cutting RAM to hold prices. Even brands like itel now ship 4GB phones running Android Go, a lighter version of Android, to stay cheap.

Is the Galaxy A57 or Redmi Note 15 Pro the better mid-range pick?

Samsung wins on updates and its AMOLED screen, while Redmi usually offers faster charging and more RAM for the money.

Will budget Samsung phones get cheaper on Black Friday?

Often, yes. Samsung A-series phones regularly drop 10% to 20% during big sales, and older models fall the most.
