Hazlewood tears through Proteas in crushing defeat
Mitchell Starc claimed the crucial wicket of Aiden Markram (75), but it was Hazlewood who did the bulk of the damage, taking 6-49 as Australia secured a commanding 214-run victory in Durban.
South Africa resumed the final day on 102-4, with Markram and Wiaan Mulder attempting to keep Australia’s bowlers at bay.
Mulder made 29 off 110 balls before falling to Hazlewood, while Kyle Verreynne managed just one as the Proteas slipped to 166-6 before lunch.
Hazlewood produced his best of the spell when he got rid of Marco Jansen with a peach, before a near unplayable delivery sent Simon Harmer packing.

Jansen contributed 35 off 54 before Hazlewood wrapped up the innings with the wicket of Anrich Nortje as South Africa were bowled out for 206.
Much of Australia’s success can be accredited to Matt Renshaw, who laid the foundation with a superb first-innings 190 before adding 82 off 99 balls in the second innings and claiming two wickets with the ball.
The 30-year-old’s heroics continued an impressive resurgence across all formats after impressing at the T20 World Cup and striking a maiden ODI century against Zimbabwe.
The sides head to Gqeberha for the second Test on 18 October.
