Three New Features Are Coming to Apple HomePod With a Free Upgrade
Apple is reportedly working on a free software upgrade for its second-generation HomePod, adding three new features. The new music-synced lighting feature will give an immersive experience to users. Other newly introduced features boost the overall experience and functionality of the device.
Apple HomePod to get new features in a coming free upgrade
Apple recently announced its new home product lineup, including HomeView, HomePod mini 2, and a new Apple TV 4K this week. Now, it is working on a software upgrade for its second-generation HomePod that will add new features to the device. To begin with, the first new feature is called Sound Glow. It will make the top of the HomePod light up in colors that match the album artwork while pulsing with the music. This feature requires an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. Moreover, the feature will be rolled out to HomePod mini 2 soon.
Apple says the lighting can respond to the music’s bass and treble in real time. Users will also be able to choose soundscapes, such as rain, to create softer lighting animations. The Cupertino tech giant is also making it easier to pair HomePod with a Mac. Although users can already stream audio to the speaker through AirPlay, the upcoming update will allow them to set it as the Mac’s default speaker. Both the 2nd gen HomePod and HomePod mini 2 will support the feature. However, the connecting Mac must support Wi-Fi 6E or later.
HomePod gets a surround sound feature to deliver an immersive audio experience
Alongside the aforementioned features, Apple has also added a surround sound feature to the smart speaker. Using the feature, users will be able to build a home theater system with four HomePods and the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. Two speakers can be placed at the front and two at the rear to deliver surround sound. Apple says the setup requires four HomePod mini 2 or second-generation HomePod speakers arranged in matching pairs.
Further, to use the surround sound feature, the Apple TV 4K must be on the latest software version. The feature is limited to the fourth-generation model, so owners of older Apple TV devices will not be able to use this setup. Last but not least, Apple has not shared an official rollout date for the features. They are expected to arrive with iOS 27.2 and HomePod software version 27.2 later in October 2026.
