Westcott Redesigns Its Rapid Box Switch Softboxes to Fold Totally Flat

Westcott has redesigned its Rapid Box Switch Fold-Flat softbox lineup, promising photographers a more portable way to create high-quality light.

The goal of the redesign was to make the softboxes take up as little room as possible and allow them to be more easily stacked with other gear. To that end, the softboxes in this line open to full size in one second and collapse down just as quickly into what the company describes as an “ultra-flat profile,” to “help creators fit more lighting gear in fewer bags.”

The redesigned Rapid Box Switch line comes in nine shapes and sizes, and the new line includes a Bowens Switch Insert, inner and outer diffusion panels, a 55-degree grid, and a carry case all in a single package. It’s unusual for grids — which narrow the light spill — to come included at no extra charge, so Westcott is really packing in the value here. The full line includes 2-, 3-, and 4-foot octa boxes; 2-by-3, 3-by-3, and 3-by-4 softboxes; and 1-by-3, 1-by-4, and 1-by-6 strip softboxes.

“The redesigned softbox mount makes attaching Switch Inserts faster and easier. Each all-metal insert slides into the built-in channel and locks securely into place, while a slide release allows it to detach instantly when changing lighting systems,” Westcott says.

“The included Bowens Switch Insert fits many popular lights, including the Westcott FJ800, FJ400 Series, FJ250, and L120-B. Existing Switch Inserts remain compatible, with options available separately for a wide range of strobes, speedlights, and continuous LED lights.”

Westcott chose a reflective silver interior to maximize output, which is paired with neutral inner and outer diffusion to soften the light before it hits the subject. The company says the dual diffusion delivers natural skin tones, accurate colors, and consistent results across photography and video applications.

This is the fastest-opening and most portable softbox we’ve ever created. With a Bowens Insert and grid included, it’s also our best value yet,” says Brandon Heiss, president of Westcott.
