Congo’s Ebola Outbreak Surpasses 10,000 Cases
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has recorded 10,060 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,887 deaths in what authorities describe as the country’s fastest-growing and deadliest outbreak. The outbreak, which was declared on May 15, has spread across 66 health zones in eight provinces. About 80% of new cases come from outside known transmission chains, whereas Africa CDC says 95% of cases must be linked to known contacts for an outbreak to be considered controlled. Healthcare facilities face shortages of personnel, equipment, and supplies, while attacks on responders and public mistrust have further hindered the response. The outbreak has also disrupted routine medical services. Beyond the DRC, infections have affected Uganda, Nigeria, and Kenya.
